Jellinek and the Center of Alcohol Studies Library

In 2013, a mini-exhibit called the Jellinek Corner was set up at the entrance of the Rutgers Center of Alcohol Studies Library to commemorate the 50thanniversary of the death of E.M. Jellinek (1890-1963). Instrumental in laying the foundations of the CAS Library, Jellinek is also considered one of the fathers of alcohol studies as a discipline.

This online exhibit is another tribute to E. M. Jellinek following up the physical display and the 2015 Special Issue of the Information Services Newsletter, dedicated to Jellinek on the 125thanniversary of his birth.

Although Jellinek left Yale before the Center moved to Rutgers in 1962, “his ideas and legacy were very much alive and shaped the Center’s goals,” as longtime Director (1980-2011) of the Summer School of Alcohol Studies Dr. Gail Milgram observed.

In the words of former Director of the Center Dr. Robert Pandina, “Mystery man or pioneer––either way, the field will always remain indebted to his forward thinking.”

The library exhibit featured an autographed copy of the original Jellinek doodle, a bust of Jellinek awarded to Mark Keller by the Jellinek Memorial Foundation, a cartoon portrait of Jellinek, Jellinek’s bookplate, and several other unique and items of Jellinek memorabilia and publications. To set the tone, Mark Keller’s typewriter was situated in front of the display with a replica McBee card from the CAAAL punch cards.
